Blessed with gifts representing the life-long stewardship of one of its members, Mr. Emil
Takach, the congregation continues its support for the ministry of the church by creating
the Zion Lutheran Church of Garfield, New Jersey endowed scholarship fund. The fund
will be established with a gift of $50,000.00 to the Lutheran Theological Seminary at
Philadelphia (LTSP).

Pastor John Puotinen from The Lutheran Seminary in Philadelphia came to lead worship and accept Zion’s gift. He expressed the Seminary’s gratitude for this thoughtful and important contribution.

Easter Sunday – Christ is Risen!

Zion is pleased to welcome Pastor Arnd Braun-Storck back to the pulpit.

Your newly elected church officers are:

Dave Lucas, Treasurer

Zion is planning a clean up day for Saturday, April 13. Please speak to Dave if you can come – or if you can’t attend that day, but would like to know what is needed that you can do at a time more convenient for you.

We would like to hold a dinner in honor of the $50,000 gift we are forwarding on to LTSP. Please see Sarah if you have ideas or want to suggest dates.

Zion is pleased to welcome Pastor David Basset to the pulpit.

Loaves and Fishes received the good news that their Non-Profit status was reinstated. Their next board meeting is April 4.

Zion’s new council meets tomorrow – Monday, March 18 – at 7:00pm. Thank you to Barbara, Ted and Mike for continuing for another term on council, and thank you to Linda and Ellen for volunteering to be our new alternates. Joan, Eubie, and Leah Ann are in the second year of their term, and Dave remains treasurer. Next Sunday we will find out who was elected President and Secretary at the meeting.

Lutheran Day at Great Adventure is scheduled for Monday, July 1. Please speak to Barbara Lucas if you would like tickets.

This Wednesday will be the last mid-week worship at Ellen’s House. Holy Week worship is as follows:

Zion is pleased to welcome Pastor Braun-Storck back to the pulpit.

Our sympathies go out to Dave Lucas and his family on the death of his mother. The Wake and Funeral are on Tuesday.

June Snyder is home and hopes to join us at worship soon.

Christ Vitone is back in HUMC with an infection in his shunt and expects to be there a couple of weeks.

Thanks to everyone for a very interactive and productive Annual Meeting. Hopefully we will accomplish all the items on our “to do list” for this year.

Emil Socha (1927-2013)

Emil Socha a lifetime resident of Garfield, passed into life eternal on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at the age of 85. Prior to his retirement in 1984, he worked in the shipping department of Continental Can Company in Passaic for 31 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean Conflict, receiving the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, and was a life member of the Garfield V.F.W. Benda-Roerich Post 2867. He was a lifetime member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Garfield, a member of the national A.A.R.P., an avid Yankee baseball fan, and was inducted into the Garfield Baseball Hall of Fame. Emil was the devoted son of the late Andrew and Anna (nee Luckach) Socha, dear brother of John Socha of Garfield, and the late Andrew Socha, Johanna Molchon, and Helen Gavlak. Emil is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service Tuesday, 10 AM, at the Kamienski Funeral Home, 207 Ray Street, Garfield, officiant Rev. Janet Blair. Interment Lodi Cemetery in Lodi. Visiting Monday 2-4 and 7-9 PM.

June Snyder was scheduled to be released from the hospital on 3/2.

Loaves and Fishes received the good news that their Non-Profit status was reinstated last week. Their next board meeting is scheduled for April 4th.

Professor : You are a Christian, aren’t you, son ?

Student : Yes, sir.

Professor: So, you believe in GOD ?

Student : Absolutely, sir.

Professor : Is GOD good ?

Student : Sure.

Professor: Is GOD all powerful ?

Student : Yes.

Professor: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to GOD to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But GOD didn’t. How is this GOD good then? Hmm?
